Eagle-eyed social media users had been discussing what could possibly be behind the partially hidden door.
The mystery of the M5 secret door first attracted the attention of local media outlets when a heated debate followed the posting of a photograph on
SomersetLive's M5 traffic and travel group.
The door in question, which is obscured by paintwork beneath an overpass, is situated on the M5 Northbound near the Wynhol Viaduct near Clevedon, England.
"When I travel up the M5 with one of my passengers, he is obsessed with a door that is located here," said one user.
"He's convinced it could be the entrance to a complete new world, a men in black type location. I reckon it's a storage cupboard. Does anyone know ?"
Keen to solve the enigma, a local media outlet contacted National Highways to find out more.
The good news is that they were able to solve the mystery.
The bad news is that the explanation is not particularly exciting.
"The entrance is an access point to the end chambers of the bridge, in which National Highways carries out structural maintenance and inspections," said a spokesperson.
Not a back door entrance to Narnia, then...
