Michigan substitute teacher is fired after using Ouija board in class

The action was taken after parents expressed their concerns about their children being exposed to the practice.
A staple of horror movies, paranormal investigations and mediumship sessions, the Ouija board is typically operated by having participants place a finger on a planchette which then moves between the printed letters and words to spell out a message from beyond the grave.

While many dismiss them as supernatural claptrap, others remain convinced that they are the real deal - even warning people against their use in fear of summoning something 'unnatural'.

For some, such fears are so genuine that they dare not touch or even set eyes upon one.

When parents learned that a substitute teacher had brought out a Ouija board during a class at Freeman Elementary School in Flint, Michigan recently, therefore, many were understandably concerned about any potential malign influence that the board might have had.

At a meeting of the Board of Education, Superintendent Kevelin Jones stated that Ouija boards were definitely not part of the curriculum.
The teacher in question, who has not been named, ended up being fired from their job.

"It's not something we condone as it pertains to speaking about those types of things in a way that would instill fear or speak away from the curriculum," said Jones.

"We have rectified that situation and we have determined that we would not have that particular third-party staff member in the district so we can ensure the safety and well-being of our scholars."

It remains unclear in what context the board was used or why the teacher had chosen to use it.

Suffice to say, they are unlikely to do so again.

It’s a relic of the Victorian Spiritualist era. Adults who believe in this nonsense today are just as ignorant as children who do.  If kids are curious about the subject then they should learn about it within in its proper historical context instead of blindly believing in sensationalistic societal tropes. Leave superstition back in the Middle Ages where it belongs

Absolutely. My poor father was brought up as a strict Pentecostalist, believed in speaking in tongues, evil spirits, and was fearful of witchcraft, pop music, sex, etc. In all other spheres of life he was sensible and rational, it was just that he had been got young by religion.

When you starting looking into the paranormal and supernatural, there are a lot of very mundane explanations for phenomena. But I'm glad you're doing your own research. I wish another member would look outside his bubble (not saying you're in a bubble).

I agree that the teacher should not have used the Ouija board. Even if you don't believe in its supernatural powers, at least one of the children could have, either previously or after the incident, read or heard Ouija board horror stories and was frightened by the teacher's action as a result. But I don't think the teacher should have been fired. I would have told him/her to not use the board again. But the teacher was a substitute, so maybe he/she had less leeway as far as mistakes -- like a star NFL player can get away with more than a third string guy.
