The structure was thought to have once housed the chest in which Moses placed the original ten commandments.
One of the most sought-after and mystifying religious artifacts in history, the Ark of the Covenant remains a fascinating enigma and nobody is even quite sure if it ever actually existed at all.
Even if the Ark was real, we don't know if it survived and even if it is still around, nobody knows where.
Now, though, new archaeological excavations in Israel have unveiled an important new clue in the mystery in the form of a structure thought to have once housed the Ark itself.
The building, which is situated at the ancient biblical site of Shiloh, happens to match the precise dimensions of the Tabernacle that was said to have once housed the relic.
In addition, large numbers of animal bones found in the vicinity confirm that this was a place of ritualistic significance.
"This isn't a coincidence," dig director Dr Scott Stripling told
The Christian Broadcasting Network.
"The evidence of sacrificial rituals here is overwhelming, and it matches the biblical account to a degree that's hard to ignore."
Pottery fragments unearthed at the site were found to also date back to the relevant time period.
But even if this was once the resting place of the Ark of the Covenant, where is it now ?
Sadly, its current location continue to remain a complete mystery.
