The breakthrough could soon make it possible for human babies to be born without a biological mother.
In news that is sure to be met with equal parts excitement and trepidation, scientists have revealed that they have found a way to use DNA from skin cells to create viable human eggs.
The breakthrough means that it will eventually be possible for women experiencing issues with their eggs to have their own genetic children, or for two men to have a baby without the involvement of a woman.
"Many women are unable to have a family because they have lost their eggs, which can occur for a range of reasons including after cancer treatment," said the University of Edinburgh's Professor Richard Anderson who was not involved in the study.
"The ability to generate new eggs would be a major advance."
"This study shows that the genetic material from skin cells can be used to generate an egg-like cell with the right number of chromosomes to be fertilized and develop into an early embryo."
"There will be very important safety concerns but this study is a step towards helping many women have their own genetic children."
It may still be quite some time, however, before this method will be available to the general public.
"While this is still very early laboratory work, in the future it could transform how we understand infertility and miscarriage, and perhaps one day open the door to creating egg- or sperm-like cells for those who have no other options," said the University of Southampton's Professor Ying Cheong, who was also not involved in the study.
