The best-selling Swiss author, who was one of the architects of the 'ancient aliens' concept, has sadly passed away.
Von Daniken originally rose to fame in 1968 following the publishing of his most celebrated work - Chariots of the Gods - a book detailing the idea that ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians and Sumerians were gifted advanced technologies from extraterrestrial visitors thousands of years ago.

It was this, he argued, that enabled them to build ancient wonders such as the pyramids.

His book's success brought with it renewed interest in the ancient world, the possibilities of extraterrestrial intelligence and the unexplained in general.

Even so, he did have his critics - with some arguing that Von Daniken's work was more akin to pseudohistory, pseudoarchaeology and pseudoscience.
Nonetheless, he went on to publish a whole string of books and traveled the world, visiting many of the locations that were the topic of his ancient astronaut theories.

Interest in his work waned by the 1980s, but his theories continued to influence popular culture for decades, appearing in TV shows such as Ancient Aliens, which ran for 277 episodes.

Even The X-Files picked up on some of the themes that he had first introduced.

His theories about ancient visitors from space were also the topic of some lengthy debates right here on our own discussion forum more than 20 years ago.

Von Daniken sadly died at a hospital in central Switzerland this week at the age of 90.

I recommend reading this: #206. Not any support for Von Daniken of course, or that what they say is necessarily wrong, but these guys are as bad or worse.

I'm aware the dude is a Christian apologist. I remember stumbling onto and watching a lot of his vids on the subject like a decade ago. I believe he goes into defending Nephilim towards the end of AA Debunked and I think he's also an evolution denier. Regardless, he really is right about almost everything in that documentary. My favorite part is how no one (including myself) figured out that the Tolima "fighter jets" were sucker-mouthed catfish. I'm particularly embarrassed as I'm familiar with marine biology and I should have recognized it a long time ago.

They are not (were) just "apologists", but rather hard core Evangelical kooks of the highest order. The post I linked is just a few highlights.

I read the post and a lot of that is like the stuff I heard from his own youtube channels years ago and stuff I'd just expect someone like him to believe anyway. It's pretty typical for Evangelical Christians. He also interpreted aliens as demons. Pretty run-of-the-mill.

Actually they get a lot of basic facts wrong, which is odd considering how readily available the information is. For example, White says G1 is made up of "about 85% sandstone" "quarried right on site" and that "the other 15% of the stones like that of limestone and granite would have to be brought in from a slightly farther away location". No, it is "85%" limestone, part of the Mokattam limestone formation, which the closest sandstone quarry is at Gebel el Ahmar about 5 miles north of Giza. He somehow does not understand they used two kinds of limestone with the other being from Tura which is ... [More]

Fair enough, but I think the point is none of these mistakes change things in favor of ancient alien interpretations. As in, they don't change the fact that these were totally possible to construct with mundane technologies at the time.

Not sure why you chopped of the last bit which agrees with you: "There were several other things along the way, and not that this changes the overarching theme, the show Ancient Aliens is definitively and unfortunately fringe porn tripe,  but this is not "scholarship" in and of itself by any means and the proprietors are kooks in their own right. Caveat emptor."

I didn't ignore it. I just wasn't responding to it. I agree.

This is actually true. Narinder Singh Kapany was a physicist and pioneer in the field of fiber optics, and is known for coining and popularising the term "fiber optics." His work led to modern high-speed internet, telecommunications, medical endoscopy, and laser surgery, and a nomination for the Nobel prize. As per AI, he is also considered the "father of fiber optics". He is also known as 'The man who bent light.' His research in fiber optics, lasers, solar energy and its applications in defense, bio-medical instruments, communications and pollution control monitoring earned him more... [More]
