During the Cold War, a spate of mysterious sightings ended up exposing a plot to hide nukes from the US.
Back in 1967, eagle-eyed skywatchers in the western Soviet Union noticed a strange formation in the sky - a crescent-shaped anomaly that was sighted on six separate occassions.
The sightings sparked a great deal of speculation, with UFO groups at the time writing extensively about the phenomenon and debating over what could be responsible.
Strangely, however, all of the discussion and coverage suddenly went silent overnight.
It turned out that the phenomena was actually caused by a highly secretive Soviet project designed to make it possible to launch nuclear missiles at the United States from the South Pole.
The sightings had been of test flights of the R-36 Orb - a space missile capable of bypassing US missile detection systems by approaching from the south.
The weapon would have been used in a 'first strike' attack to decimate US targets, though its lack of accuracy made its practicality somewhat limited.
Fortunately, the US got wind of what the Soviet Union was doing and called them out on it.
The Soviets never officially acknowledged the scheme, instead claiming that it had been launching "scientific research satellites".
It also wasn't long before the R-36 Orb had become obsolete anyway.
If it had been used to attack targets in the US, no doubt it would have sparked a nuclear World War III.
