What if the ancient wonder is not a tomb at all, but something of a larger - even cosmic - significance ?
Egypt's spectacular pyramids are rightly considered wonders of the ancient world, but even after thousands of years, there is still much about these enigmatic and impressive structures that we do not understand.
Now a new study has put forward the idea that the true purpose of the Great Pyramid in particular may lie, not in serving as the final resting place of a pharaoh, but in enabling communication over vast distances through space.
According to the theory, the structure's precise location, proportions and alignment may have enabled it to act as a "gravitational transmitter" that was built as part of a "sophisticated system of cosmic-scale communication."
That said, author Jalal Jafari of the Laser and Plasma Institute at Shahid Beheshti University in Iran has emphasised that the paper - which has not been peer-reviewed - is purely theoretical.
While he acknowledges the fact that the gravitational effect of the Great Pyramid would be extremely small relative to that of the Earth itself, Jafari argues that, over time, its repeated movement due to the planet's rotation could create small but perceptible changes.
The Earth's orbit acts as a giant carrier signal, he argues, with the Great Pyramid acting as a modulator which alters this signal.
The idea has been met with some considerable skepticism, not least from scientists who argue that there is absolutely no evidence that this is the case.
Similar theories have also been previously dismissed as baseless pseudoscience.
As of right now, Jadfari's study makes for an interesting thought exercise, but he is going to face an uphill battle actually convincing the scientific or archaeological communities that it holds genuine merit.
