Back in 2002, a man who had been attacked later woke up to find that his mental capabilities had massively increased.
Savant syndrome typically manifests as a life-long, exceptional aptitude for some particular skill, but with the downside of also suffering from some form of mental impairment.
Such individuals are usually born with this condition or see it develop very early in life, but in extremely rare cases, it is possible for it to appear later in life, usually due to some form of injury or illness.
In one well known case, 31-year-old Jason Padgett from Tacoma, Washington had been walking home from a night out when he was attacked by two men who struck him over the head.
When he awoke the next day, he felt different and strange.
It soon became apparent that he had developed a new level of understanding of the universe, perceiving everything around him in terms of a geometrical relationship to pi.
It wasn't until several years later that, upon undergoing a brain scan, he learned something had happened inside his head when he was attacked that had shifted his perception and abilities.
One side of his brain had been damaged and the other seemed to have 'woken up' to compensate.
Scientists now believe that this phenomenon may be the key to understanding what is known as "acquired savant syndrome" - a condition so rare that there are only 40 known cases.
Perhaps by studying such individuals, it will one day be possible to find a way to induce such an increase in mental abilities without the associated damage or downsides.
