Tampa International Airport shuts down temporarily so workers can perform maintenance.
TIA's main runway will be closed until the 13th to accommodate changes that have arisen from the slow creep of Earth's Magnetic North. Workers will be required to repaint several indicators and replace many others to make up for the 40 mile-per-year shift of the pole toward Russia. Maintenance on the airport's other two runways will proceed later this month.
The Federal Aviation Administration required the runway designation change to account for what a National Geographic News report described as a gradual shift of the Earth's magnetic pole at nearly 40 miles a year toward Russia because of magnetic changes in the core of the planet.
