Just curious Mentalcase, why do you think the magnetic field would be shut down? I find it very hard to believe that the magnetic field would just turn off. In the past it has flipped, but the amount of iron in the core is not going to disappear and turn off the magnetic field. Even this article shows that it will be a gradual flip of the field and not a cancellation of the field. Edit: spelling It wouldn't be shut off completely, according to that show. with all these opinions about how far the magnetic north pole is actually moving each year im beginning to wonder if any one knows where the exact location is. they cant all be right

That's not accurate. According to NASA, pole reversals occur about every 500,000 years. The last pole reversal occured about 700,000 years ago. So I dont think ancient egyptians saw magnetic reversals a couple of times.

The magnetic poles wander quite a bit over time. A full reversal is rare on our timescale, and a completely different event. The North magnetic pole's wanderings over the last few thousand years:
