A diver believes that he may have discovered a missing nuclear weapon at the bottom of the Arctic Ocean.
The bomb was being carried from Alaska to Texas aboard a Convair B-36B bomber for a nuclear attack simulation mission back in 1950 when the aircraft got in to difficulty due to the cold weather.
The bomb, which did not contain the plutonium core necessary for a nuclear detonation, was jettisoned from the plane and allegedly detonated (using regular explosives) in mid-air.
The 17-strong crew, of which 5 perished in the freezing water, bailed out, leaving the plane to continue on autopilot for a considerable distance before it eventually crashed.
Now however, commercial diver Sean Smyrichinsky has come forward to claim that he has located what looks like a nuclear device on the sea floor off the coast of British Columbia.
"I got a little far from my boat and I found something that I'd never ever seen before," he said. "It resembled, like, a bagel cut in half, and then around the bagel these bolts molded into it."
It wasn't until he saw an image of the Mark IV bomb however that he realized the resemblance.
The Royal Canadian Navy is now planning to send investigators to the area to take a closer look.
