Are the oceans made from comets ?

Earth's oceans may not have been formed as the result of vapors emitted during early volcanism but may have instead been created from the impact of comets arriving from the outer Solar System.
Contrary to preconceived notions, the atmosphere and the oceans were perhaps not formed from vapors emitted during intense volcanism at the dawning of our planet.

#2 Posted by greggK on 15 November, 2009, 14:12How much star stuff was coming into the atmosphere after the earth was formed? If I remember right, I think I read that oxygen was not part of the first atmosphere, but it came from volcanic activity. #3 Posted by ShaunZero on 15 November, 2009, 18:35I have a hard time comprehending how this much water could come from comets as well. Though I havn't researched it yet so I can't make an educated opinion, it's just that off-hand the idea seems insane.
