A reconstruction of a brain from a 28,000 year-old human skull has revealed that our brains are actually shrinking.
The ancient skull housed a brain over 20 percent larger than those of present day humans. Scientists believe the reduction in size is due to our brains becoming more efficient like shrinking computers.
Our brains are shrinking, according to scientists who have recreated a 28,000-year-old skull from remains found in France. The French team, which claims to have produced one of the best replicas yet of an early modern human’s cranium, says it is up to 20 per cent bigger than ours.

However, he said that the cerebellum — a brain structure linked to language and concentration — appears to take up a larger proportion of the head now than in the time of Cro Magnon 1.This suggests that some parts of the brain are more ‘compressible’ than others, he said. Good news for Mums I guess. So is this saying we are increasing density? A reorganized brain would simply be the product of evolution wouldn't it? Surely this is expected?

i do believe that Einstein's brain was actually smaller than average for human males. i dont have a link to cite as evidence, but i did learn that in psych class. the internet is lies anyway. Scientific studies have suggested that regions involved in speech and language are smaller, while regions involved with numerical and spatial processing are larger. Other studies have suggested an increased number of Glial cells in Einstein's brain. The lateral sulcus (Sylvian fissure) in a normal brain. In Einstein's brain, this was truncated.

No one is suggesting this means our ancestors were more intelligent as studies have found there is only a minor link between brain size and IQ. perhaps if we talking about same structure of brain . with 20% smaller , my guess is that we loss some part of brain.

The way i see it, in times past people had to live by thier wits, if they were not quick thinkers they would not survive the harsh hunter gatherer lifestyle. There are loads of programs where western peoples go to live with tribes and vice versa. The westerns fail miserably to hunt in the jungle yet the tribesmen (amazingly! /sarcasm off) manage to use a mircrowave in about 30 seconds. These days the single biggest contributing factor to your survial is luck, backed up by medicine and natural resistence to various deieses. Thus those who live and pass on there genes dont pass on the smart peop... [More]

So they find one skull and then comparing it to ours find it larger and therefor our brains must be shriking? Seems like there's a lot of "If"s involved in this theory

Poor guy must've just had a really big head. That's like distant ancestors in our future digging up mini-me's grave and saying "Damn, we're getting bigger".

Scientists, where do they get their stuff from? "Several theories have been advanced to explain the mystery of the shrinking brain. One is that big heads were necessary to survive Upper Paleolithic life, which involved cold, outdoor activities. A second theory is that skulls developed to cope with a chewy diet of rabbits, reindeer, foxes and horses. As our food has become easier to eat, so our heads have stopped growing, according to supporters of this theory." Ok, outdoors chewing on rabbits = Big head needed. Indoors eating cooked meals = Small heads suffice. Research, experimentation and ob... [More]

Research, experimentation and observation. Yes, certainly, but let's say a rodent, it need a quite strong device for chewing, still it's head might not be large.
