An object recently detected by astronomers as it whizzed past the Earth has turned out to be space junk.
Initially thought to be an asteroid the object was found not to match any known asteroid types and was only a few metres in size. Having made a close pass before heading back off in to the void of space NASA boffins believe it was nothing more than debris such as a spent booster stage from a rocket.
NASA boffins report that an unknown object approaching the Earth from deep space is almost certainly artificial in origin rather than being an asteroid.
