Mars may not be lifeless, say scientists

Scientists have revisited the idea that organic molecules could be present in the soil on Mars.
Tests conducted in the Atacama Desert in Chile intended to be as close to the conditions on Mars as possible have revealed that the same tests conducted by the Viking lander yielded similar results when conducted there and that chemical reactions in the soil due to the test effectively killed off all the organic compounds.
Carbon-rich organic molecules, which serve as the building blocks of life, may be present on Mars after all, say scientists - challenging a widely-held notion of the Red Planet as barren.

We need new places to fish. Can you imagine ice fishing on Europa! If you can wait however long it would take to dig through the ice, that is.

Hey, they can dig through the ice, build some kind of domed resort and then just have to start the tourship route. On a serious note didn't they already bring back rocks from mars with bacterial fossils or something several years ago?

I think this is what your thinking about http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/planetary/marslife.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allan_Hills_84001 It doesn't conclusively say life existed on Mars, but I am looking for a few other links. You can also do some research on your own. -Trix P.S - forgot to add the wiki link

That must have been a "DOH!" moment for science. When they realized that the thing they were trying to detect was probably destroyed and undetectable by the testing method.

I just love Mars, fascinating planet! It's so near and yet so far--and seems so like our own desert regions. I wish I could just go there and muck around in the dirt for awhile and see what's really going on.
