Goats bred to produce spider silk

Scientists have succeeded in breeding goats capable of producing spider silk proteins in their milk.
The research is designed to help avoid some of the difficulties involved in obtaining silk from spiders. "There's a lot of interest in spider silk fibers because they're stronger than almost any other manmade fiber and they're also elastic," says molecular biologist Randy Lewis.
With help from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Lewis and his team have figured out a way to put the spider's silk-making genes into goats.

It's not like we're making a dog mate with a cat. Combining these things can greatly benefit us. Agreed. The problem is we have no idea of what the potential outcomes of gene manipulation could be. Just like exploding the first atomic bomb - they truly didn't know if the atmosphere would become fissionable and ignite as well, yet they set it off anyway. Had it not been self limiting, what then? A handful of people are assuming responsibility for the world, are the checks and balances adequate? After all, where do bioweapons come from - genetic manipulation. It's not what we are trying to do to... [More]

The project takes its name from the maximum weight and velocity a Type 1 bulletproof vest can withstand from a .22 calibre Long Rifle bullet. By grafting spider silk between the epidermis and dermis, the skin was able to stop a bullet that was fired at a reduced speed. However, it failed to repel a bullet that was fired at normal speed from a .22 calibre rifle. Pretty sure GM food and animals has been going on for hundreds of years with less organized methods. Breeding 2 species of the same cow to give birth to a meatier cow. Or 2 sheep to give birth to a sheep which produces more wool. Or carrots to be orange.
