A long-standing question in the fields of science is just how frequently are scientists guilty of scientific misconduct ? A recent analysis that is aiming to answer this question suggests that the figure might be higher than thought.
It's a long-standing and crucial question that, as yet, remains unanswered: just how common is scientific misconduct? In the online, open-access journal PLoS ONE, Daniele Fanelli of the University of Edinburgh reports the first meta-analysis of surveys questioning scientists about their misbehaviours."

Very well said mate. I've noticed that a lot of people with out any understanding of science and its workings are quite happy to criticise it and those who work in the field and almost always with out justification. I agree Matt however no matter what, money and profit can not be taken out of the equation. For example there are diet pills out there that are deadly but backed by science, who's science is what should be questioned. Any science conducted based around a profit margin needs to be examined very closely.

I'm sure the scientific method attempts to be objective but that does not mean it isn't completely abused by multinational corporations. Pharmaceutical corporations - Profit Vs human health: Theres also this award winning film: http://datasupply.blogspot.com/2008/11/cor...-shareware.html

Yes but the vast majority of science is not based around finance, most fields are of absolutely no interest to big business.

For science to claim it's not corrupt is a joke. Profit above all else for most. However science does play a very important part of our lives and we need it. Science is our future and science needs to be held to a very high standard and if not than it becomes a mess of lies and deceit... [More]

Yes but the vast majority of science is not based around finance, most fields are of absolutely no interest to big business. Yes Matt I agree again, however you are a marine biologist I do recall (could be wrong) and that is an amazing field of research, one that has little profit involved. Or does it The field of science encompasses so many different fields that being involved with one doesn't mean it has to do anything with another. Just as with any, science can be good or bad. What we have to do is take profit out of the equation and replace it with the betterment of mankind. I know your wo... [More]

One must be also be aware of the distinction between scientists and "policy makers", be they corporate or political. Cases of the abuse of objectively derived information by power structures has been known to occur. It would be unjust to criticize science per se, as the cause of these mis-deeds. Knowledge is power and power in the wrong hands is subject to abuse.

If I understand research right, a scientist of any kind will have their results 'peer' reviewed before any publication of any kind. Each scientific system has its established facts and if you do not go by those established facts when it is reviewed, it is discarded.

Not quite, there are rules on how you should conduct and present research. Not facts, rules.

Nice post and links !!!!! For science to claim it's not corrupt is a joke. ST glad you like them Found this article quite interesting: One in seven scientists say colleagues fake data Faking scientific data and failing to report commercial conflicts of interest are far more prevalent than previously thought, a study suggests. One in seven scientists says that they are aware of colleagues having seriously breached acceptable conduct by inventing results. And around 46 per cent say that they have observed fellow scientists engage in “questionable practices”, such as presenting data selective... [More]
