A Mayan built conduit designed to deliver pressurised water has been unearthed at Palenque in southern Mexico.
The Mayans engineering capabilities are often overlooked but this new find is evidence that they were masters of plumbing in addition to being skilled at constructing large, impressive monuments and structures.
Add plumbing to the mysterious arts of the ancient Maya, investigators report. In a Journal of Archaeological Science study, anthropologist Kirk French and civil engineer Christopher Duffy of Penn State report on a conduit designed to deliver pressurized water to Palenque, an urban center in southern Mexico, more than 1,400 years ago.

Perhaps it's time to invite engineers to all archeological digs. Archeologists are often incapable of discerning technical feats. Il n'y a pas plus aveugle qu'un qui ne veut voir.

Were not the Romans also masters in plumbing? Please correct me if i am wrong, but I thought the Romans worked with plumbing as well as indoor hot water before these times mentioned in the article... Also, is the area of the Mayans more or less searched for archeological discovery than the Roman area??

yeah? wow stone pipes carrying water? some high tech stuff there, especially when it is nothing more than common sense. hey i guess common sense really is common after all. so there you are a ruler in a large town and people have to travel far to get water and they are complaining. you get this idea that if you could only "move" or make the river flowover here rather than over there. you divert its path but realize that cutting a stream bed through the ground is going to make it muddy and no-body wants muddy water to drink. so you think hmmmm, well make stone water channels!!!! then a year lat... Yep, the Romans and other cultures also developed complex plumbing systems earlier than the Maya. I'm not sure about how much research the South American civilizations get, but I'm sue it's a fair amount compared to the other areas in the world. It's tempered due to the forest reclaiming and hid... [More]
