NASA to lead global asteroid response

NASA will play a leading role in Earth's response to possible asteroid threats.
Details of NASA role in dealing with an asteroid threat were sent in letters from director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy John Holdren to the Congressional committee leaders this month.
NASA will be mandated to notify other organizations, including the US Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), if a dangerous asteroid is found, and to drive research and development on the capability needed to deflect the rock.

Awesome, it'll be just like all the Hollywood movies. Now we can all stand ontop of our cars in a traffic standstill and cheer when NASA pushes away the rock!

Have we ever had to deflect one yet? Are we even capable? One wonders! What size object would we be capable of deflecting?

Uh one question how are going to deflect some rock from hitting the earth when we are unable to even balance the budget let alone pay for the research oh never mind I forgot they'll just print more money lol

One wonders! What size object would we be capable of deflecting? At this stage there has been no deflection done by man , i watched an interesting doco a few weeks ago on the subject , they have a few different methods to deflect them .... solar sails to pull the object , rocket boosters to push them and i also recall them talking about parking a big spaceship near them to use small amount of gravity the ship provides to alter the course of the object . I have no doubt that in the future we will HAVE to deflect an asteroid its just a matter of time . TIP.

Have we ever had to deflect one yet? Are we even capable? Man you never go to the movie? At least four were hit by our heroes.They know a lot of that in Hollywood.

Why we always think that with mass we must go with mass or with huge exposion or something.. Maybe is there something else we can use like frequency or sorta....

There are a multitude of scenarios to consider. A large object need not strike the earth to cause mayhem. It just needs to be captured by our gravitational field and go into orbit. It would cause havoc  from the tides to distortion of the earth's shape to alteration of our orbit around the sun. Frightening to say the least. We wouldn't have a snowball's hope in hell.
