A nine-year-old whose hand was severed in an accident had it surgically attached to her leg.
The move was designed to keep the hand alive until it could be re-attached to her arm, three months later surgeons went ahead with the operation to reunite her arm with her hand with encouraging results.
In July, nine-year-old Ming Li lost her hand in a tractor accident. Her arm was too damaged to reattach it, so they grafted it to her leg instead. Three months later, her hand's back on her arm and regaining function.

Wow. You can attach severed limbs to parts of the body where they don't belong to (even if they aren't functional there)? Yes, you basically make a skin graft with the two parts and then do microsurgery to attach the blood vessels. Which is the whole point of putting the hand/arm/misplaced body part on the body in a different position. By grafting into a blood supply that limb is able to be perfused with blood and survive while its place of origin heals enough for a reattachment surgery. There's a common misconception that neurons don't ever regrow. Only neurons of the central nervous system d... [More]
