Japanese turn to Buddhist and Shinto traditions for strength after the earthquake and tsunami.
At a time of unbelievable devastation to the world's third largest economy, the people of Japan turn to the ancient traditions of Buddhism and Shinto to find comfort and strength. Japanese Buddhism focuses on prayer and ritual for both survivors and those whose lives were lost as well as striving to reduce physical and mental suffering.
Seven days after the quake and tsunami, waves of memorials will begin in whatever temples remain near the disaster zone. In Buddhist traditions, the seventh day ritual begins 33 years of formal mourning ceremonies ahead, Williams said.
