Sisters Susan and Sandy Smith have come up with an unusual business model - insect wing jewellery.
"They're beautiful. The way they shine and reflect the light, they look like miniature stain glass windows," says Susan. While the earrings have proven quite popular there is one major flaw in the plan - the cicada insects will only be around for a few more weeks and then they will disappear until 2024.
As a business model, it has a certain undeniable flaw, but sisters Susan and Sandy Smith are making the most of a once-every-13-years event. The 60-year-old twins from Greenwood, South Carolina, are making jewellery from the wings of cicadas, a locust-like insect that is currently invading the south.
