Our ancient ancestors like Yoda spoke

A new study suggests early humans would have spoken in a subject-object-verb manner, like Yoda.
The study was conducted by two linguists who created a family tree of over 2,200 languages based on the use of similar sounds to indicate similar meanings. The results indicated that the original proto-language 50,000 years ago would have been spoken in a way similar to the way Yoda speaks in Star Wars i.e. "I the dog see" instead of "I see the dog".
What form did the first human language take? According to some linguists, all known languages descend from a proto-language, perhaps dating back to the first behaviourally modern humans 50,000 years ago.

You gotta be kidding... (insert extremely sad smiley face, shaking his little, pixilated head in dejected amazement). Translated directly to English, MOST other language grammar rules makes little sense. Why someone would do this and claim it to be OMG KEWL is beyond me. Um, no ****e they had different grammar rules. They also didn't have i-Phones and superglue... or Spandex. Well, maybe that last part is a good thing.

The French speak like that too: Je le lui donne = I it to him give. Xcept French chicks are better looking than Yoda Edit to add: and they use the force to make dudes do what their hearts desire..

Any truth to that urban legend about french girls and hairy under arms? You shouldn't have read "real men don't eat quiche"... the author confused French chicks and eye tilians ...

But Yoda doesn't speak subject-object-verb. He speaks verb-object-subject "see the dog, do I; yeeeesssss." Failed to do their homework, have they.

Geez Louise! I just looked at the website linked by the 127.3 guy. That's some disturbing stuff about violent overthrow of the government (with disclaimers stating that the depictions of decapitated politicians are only "metaphors")! Doesn't someone moderate the links here? I'm sure indecent pictures would be removed promptly, why not this stuff? I feel downright icky now.

Very interesting, thank you. I thought the first words were " Yabba Dabba Do ".

The article doesn't seem to take into account the preponderance of ancient language that are verb-subject-object: "See I the dog." The language spoken in pharaonic Egypt fit this model. In that case it might be due to the nature of Afro-Semitic languages that attached suffix pronouns to many verbs, depending on sentence syntax. In the end it's all completely theoretical--yet still very interesting. I realize I don't visit this section of UM very often. I spend nearly all of my time in the Alternative History forum. In any case, I'm not familiar with the poster named jbefumo (Post 4). Evidently... [More]
