One man received £5,000 compensation when he fell out of bed trying to answer the telephone.
In another case a worker received a £6,000 payout for injuring themselves during a first-aid course, while an employee who strained his back while trying to put paper in a printer received over £9,000. City councils spend thousands of pounds in the UK to injured employees due to accidents at work every year.
Council staff have received a total of £75 million in the past five years as compensation following accidents at work. A catalogue of farcical payouts revealed another worker got nearly £6,000 for breaking their wrist in a fall during a demonstration on a first aid course.

Crap, makes me wonder if that same person would have sued for damages if it had been their mom or a friend calling instead of work. There are indeed serious work comp claims out there. But stupid like this just is wasteful and should be tossed out.

Is there a limit to the stupidity. But mostly are there laws that support there clams for compensation. And who are the judges that decide it to compensate the man who did fall out the bed...i mean the judges are insane as the people who are asking for such compensation.

"And a teacher employed by the London Borough of Islington Council was awarded £9,065 after injuring their thumb with a school guillotine." School guillotine? So that's how they keep the little buggers in line over there in merry ol' England. Here in the USA, they patch you up and send you back to work. Though I do believe that one gets a payout if there are body parts missing following an injury.

Don't these people understand that their fraudulent claims often makes it that much more difficult for people with legitamate claims to seek just compensation? It's sad to see what some people will say or do for a few extra dollars. I agree with you all the way on this one... It is effing sickening the amount of sickening stupid claims are paid out

In all fairness a lot of those were perfectly legitimate claims..esp if there actually was negligence on the part of the council..being asulted ,exposed to asbestos or breaking a bone is hardly trivial after all .That is the trouble with news papers they give the barest details of something ,use emotive language and play on the human reaction of envy to sell a story and the result is that there is an outcry about something that has probably been mis-represented in the first place .The media twist facts to suit their angle we all know that .Yes there are stupid claims but it's up to judges and ... i agree with most of you guys in saying that these claims are ridiculous. It seems to at the fault of the person not the workplace. I guess the verdicts are all up to the judges to decide.
