A perfectly preserved fighter plane lost in 1942 has been discovered in the middle of the desert.
The discovery of the Kittyhawk P-40 has been described as the "the aviation equivalent of Tutankhamun's Tomb." It is thought that the pilot, Sergeant Dennis Copping, survived the crash but later died as he tried to escape the desert on foot. The wreckage was found by a Polish oil company worker who was exploring remote regions of the desert in Egypt.

"Once [the pilot] had crashed there, nobody was going to come and get him," said historian Andy Saunders. "It is more likely he tried to walk out of the desert but ended up walking to his death. It is too hideous to contemplate."
The RAF Museum in Hendon, North London, has been made aware of the find and plans are already under way to recover it before anyone tries to strip it for scrap or souvenirs. Efforts have also been made to trace any immediate members of Flight Sergeant Copping’s family in the UK, but it is believed that none survives.

Why are repliers claiming it's a hoax? What would anyone have to gain from this? i agree there. i suppose it's the same kneejerk response that makes people cry "Photoshop!!" to everything. Or make irrelevant sarcastic comments to Youtube videos. Actually I think it's only one nut that is claiming it's a hoax.

* I remember seeing a very similar story about, I think it was a B-24, that came down in the desert and the crew walked off and disappeared into the desert, and it was found years later in very similar condition. In fact, I think ift was recovered and was last heard of in storage in Tripoli, I think. I wonder what's happened to it now?

I wonder what became of the pilot? It's chilling though, it's like the feeling you get when you read about an old WW2 tank being pulled out of a frozen lake, you always have to stop yourself from thinking of the horror the crew must have suffered, or at least hope they got out in time.

Man what a bad situation. First crashing, then trying to fix the radio, then creating a make-shift tent and all ending up with the decision of having to trek it out into the hot desert and not sure which way to go.

I think it's more interesting to find out why he at sahara That's what I was thinking too... that's why I brought up "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" ? I mean how can a WWII plane be intact after 70 years? In the movie; in the beginning they found large vessels and airplanes fully intact in the middle of the dessert! With the whole Mayan 2012 / Alien phenomena talk recently that's what came to my mind.

Shortly after its discovery, the story went viral and it wasn't long before the wreck was being stripped. Claiming it is a hoax might be someone's attempt at discouraging more souvenir hunters. This plane belongs in a museum and it would be really great if it could be put on display in the condition in which they first found it.

I remember a similar story as a lad, but it was WW2 bomber found on the moon (British tabloid headline), its nonsense like that that can make people shout hoax when a story like this appears. Anyone else remember that one? Around the same time that Freddy Starr ate someone's hamster...
