Irom Sharmila Chanu has refused to eat or drink anything whatsoever since the year 2000.
Chanu, also known as the 'Iron Lady of Manipur' went on a hunger strike to protest the gunning down of 10 civilians at a bus stop by military soldiers. "My fast is on behalf of the people of Manipur," she said. "This is not a personal battle, it is symbolic. It is a symbol of truth, love and peace."

Far from being a short-term protest however, Chanu's fast has lasted over a decade with doctors force-feeding her through nasal drips for most of that time.
An ordinary Indian woman has been on hunger strike for the last 12—repeat 12—years in an effort to have the Government of India withdraw the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA) from Manipur and other parts of India.

Seems to me that 12 years and no change in the politics renders her protest ineffective.

This is so absurd...how is she helping anybody by forcing doctors to feed her via tubes..sounds more like someone who is obsessed with attention rather than focusing her energies and health of doing anything productive...what a waste!

I admire her willpower.

I agree with JasenChase, she needs to find a more productive way to protest the killings, since the hunger strike is getting her, and her cause, nowhere. I suppose that she is garnering some attention to herself and her cause through the newspaper headlines, but is that enough to justify twelve years of being repeatedly locked up in a jail? What is that accomplishing exactly? Nothing has changed so far regarding the law or in respects to an apology over the killings or whatever she is trying to gain out of her hunger strike. I, also, admire her willpower, but I think her whole approach is seri... [More]

I'll never understand hunger strikes. The people who do them are only hurting themselves. No one feels the hunger, no one else gets weak from starvation - only the one on strike. The only other possible victims of the suffering are the person's loved ones (watching the person wither away, etc..) So in essence, to make a "point", these people harm themselves & (potentially) their loved ones in the hopes that their government (or whoever the strike it aimed at) will feel compassion for them & cave into their demands or whatever. Does it not occur to these people that the powers that be m... [More]
