Tommy Mollo narrowly escaped drowning only to succumb to secondary drowing just hours later.
After falling off a friend's boat in to Long Island Sound, 60-year-old Mollo was able to pull himself out of the water, yet still died of drowning a few hours later. Although rare, secondary drownings can occur when a person manages to narrowly escape a conventional drowning, the water that gets in to the lungs coupled with existing health issues can be potentially fatal.
It is generally recommended that anyone who experiences a near drowning should be kept in at hospital for observation for at least 24 hours.
A 60-year-old man fell into New York’s Long Island Sound, pulled himself out — and then died several hours later, apparently of drowning. Emergency doctors today called it a case of secondary drowning, something very unusual.
