Is it possible for someone who has lost a leg or an arm to effectively regrow the missing limb ?
It's a concept that has been a staple of science fiction for years, but in reality there is currently no way to regrow a missing limb in the way that some animals like salamanders can. Regenerative medicine researcher Koudy Williams believes that the concept isn't as far-fetched as it might seem. "We're working on long-term projects to regenerate fingers and limbs," he said.One method for enabling a form of regeneration is to use some of the patient's own cells to grow a replacement organ in a lab, another would be to inject healing cells in to a diseased organ to initiative regeneration from within. "The body has the capacity to heal naturally," says Williams. "When there's an injury, cells release substances known as chemokines that attract other cells to promote healing. "
