A skydiver miraculously survived after his parachute failed to open during a 13,000ft fall.
35-year-old Liam Dunne had jumped from a plane and deployed his main parachute over a festival in New Zealand when he found himself in an unrecoverable spin. Ditching his main chute and reaching for the reserve he realised to his horror that he was unable to find the handle. The chute did finally open, but by then he was so close to the ground that it didn't really matter. Fortunately he landed on some extremely soft and boggy ground, but still managed to shatter his spine.

"Skydiving is an awesome sport, and I've done 4,000 jumps and never had a problem," he said. "As my reserve chute was coming out I realised it was too late, so I just braced for the impact. Luckily I hit the softest patch of ground on the whole airfield. I bounced hard and my whole left side went numb. " Fortunately doctors believe that despite his injuries Liam should be eventually able to walk again.[!gad]35-year-old Liam Dunne had jumped from a plane and deployed his main parachute over a festival in New Zealand when he found himself in an unrecoverable spin. Liam Dunne, 35, who is a father of two, broke his back after dramatically crashing into the ground at high speed and landing in the soft, waterlogged area.

That was a fluke, if I ever heard about one. :\

He seems to be recovering well considering he broke his back, so it's good to hear he should be walking again soon. What a very lucky person to even be alive after that fall.

skydiving is the most exhilarating and awesome thing anyone can do. If you ever get the chance you have to try it!

I'm a pilot so my question would be "why would you jump out of a perfectly good plane"?

Is it just cynical old me, or does anyone else think it's sus' that his main chute failed then his reserve wasn't readily available.. If I was him I'd be a little paranoid at this point... .

There going to end up changing the label "Skydiver" to "Grounddiver" before long. Glad to see he made it.
