Jiroemon Kimura was not just the oldest living human but also the oldest human being that ever lived.
Born on 19 April 1897, Kimura surpassed the previous world record held by Christian Mortense, a Danish immigrant to the US who lived from 1882 to 1998. Officials in Japan announced that Kimura had died in hospital following treatment for pneumonia. The title of world's oldest living human has now been passed to 115-year-old Misao Okawa who is also from Japan.
"Jiroemon Kimura was an exceptional person," said Craig Glenday of Guinness World Records. "As the only man to have ever lived for 116 years - and the oldest man whose age has been fully authenticated - he has a truly special place in world history."
Jiroemon Kimura, born on 19 April 1897, had been recognised by the Guinness World Records as the world's oldest living person and the oldest man ever.
