A group of masked men targeted the tree after it had been blamed for the possession of three children.
The strange series of events took place on Thakandhoo Island in the Maldives where an otherwise innocuous tree that had been planted on school grounds 13 years ago suddenly became embroiled in controversy after a spate of 'possessions' were blamed on spirits the resided within it.

"Things went really bad last December," said one local man. "Many of those children have recovered now but there is a child who is still possessed and there is a young girl who loses consciousness whenever she walks past this tree."
Dissatisfied with the school's lack of action on the matter, a group of men decided to take matters in to their own hands and broke in to the school in the early hours of the morning to chop the tree down.

"Three masked men jumped over the school wall last night and one of them threatened the security guard with a knife," said Thakandhoo Island Council Vice President Ibrahim Saeed. "And while he held the security guard, the other two went in with a hand saw and cut down the tree."

Officials are now conducting an investigation to determine who was responsible for the attack.

this is why I don't trust trees, there are just too many evil trees out there!

I wonder what would happen if someone told them that since the tree is gone the evil spirits can now find a new home in their houses and posses anyone since they are not confined anymore? Sounds like mass hysteria and blaming illness on the poor tree.

In the New Testament, Jesus curses a fig tree (Ficus) because it didn't have fruit on it when he was hungry. Given that the same passage also notes that it wasn't the season for the tree to be in fruit, I'm not sure what sense that makes at all. Maybe religions just have something against poor fig trees. It was also fig leaves that Adam and Eve used to cover the nakedness. The fig tree in Scripture is sometimes used as a symbol for the nation Israel. It was also under the fig, Ficus religiosa that Buddha was supposedly enlightened. But the real question is did Newton really get hit on the head... [More]

Sounds like mass hysteria and blaming illness on the poor tree. Sounds like a cash register. Get a priest outfit, tell them you can cleanse their city/village/mud hut for a price, say some holy-like Mumbo-Jumbo then fly before they figure out your a fraud.

Why do they call it a Jinn tree?

Sounds like mass hysteria and blaming illness on the poor tree. Surely if they had just performed an exorcism on the tree it wouldn't have needed to be cut down. Some people just don't use simple logic & common sense

This article sure doesn't give much information. Like why these masked men that cut the tree down believed it was capable of possessing their children. Guess one only has to look to the Jinn tree for the answer. Because like the Djinn, it is thought to hold evil spirts. Question is ~ if they believed that, why did they plant the tree on school grounds in the first place?

Tree spirits possessing people? HA!!! And they think our species isn't evolved enough...

I think 'vengeful spirits' would rather inhabit something that can move around, trees would be boring.
