Brian Cox: 'stupidity' is our biggest threat

Professor Brian Cox believes that 'human stupidity' is the biggest threat to civilization.
When we think of apocalyptic scenarios we tend to focus on things like supervolcano eruptions, asteroid impacts or viral pandemics, but according to physicist Brian Cox it is our own stupidity as a species that generally underlines all other threats to our survival.

In particular Prof Cox maintains that there is a distinct lack of action from world leaders with regard to tackling environmental issues and too great an emphasis on meaningless political conflicts.
"If there's just this one planet on which there's any meaning, how would you arrange your affairs?" he asked. "Would you really sit there and divide it up into lots of autonomous regions and spend a lot of money making sure they don't invade each other ? Or would you be more concerned with protecting civilization as a whole, such as making sure we're not going to get wiped out by a big space rock."

The physicist also warned that a lack of investment in space exploration could be disastrous.

"It won't turn out well for us if we sit here on Earth and don't bother with space," he said. "The Apollo astronauts thought we'd be on Mars by now, and that we'd have Moon bases by the 80s. America would be in a far better position now had they done it."

I believe most people are wilfully ignorant because its easier to let someone else do your thinking for you. An education system which encouraged critical thinking rather than fact recall could cure this. However our leaders prefer governing the wilfully ignorant. Br Cornelius I hear the mantra among educators all the time -- teach the children how to learn, how to think -- don't just teach them facts, but teachers don't do it and I think in reality have no idea how to do it.People in Vietnam with serious learning problems come out of poverty situations where they were malnourished and maybe m... It's really the insurance industry's fault, although often the insurance company has not choice because of regulatory pressure. This sort of thing is a good way to get a new house without committing a crime. It's really educational for an insurance adjustor to watch a fire chief walking down the street deciding which houses he can defend and which he has to let burn. The chief decides in less than two or three minutes whether the insurance company will have to write a $250,000 check. Insurance companies never used to give credits on premiums for defensible space measures, so nobody did them. T... [More]

It seems that Greed is a factor that plays a role in human stupidity. There are other fuel alternatives that burn cleaner and produce zero admissions compared to fossil fuels but politicians and big business don't want to go that route because of the money factor even if it would be a much better environment for mother earth.

It seems that Greed is a factor that plays a role in human stupidity. Can't argue with that. There are other fuel alternatives that burn cleaner and produce zero admissions compared to fossil fuels And have been for a while now. but politicians and big business don't want to go that route because of the money factor Who doesn't like easy money? even if it would be a much better environment for mother earth. They just don't care. The only problem they have is the problem of today(whatever that may be in their eyes), they don't care about tomorrow because, well, they just won't be here, doesn't ... [More]

They just don't care. The only problem they have is the problem of today(whatever that may be in their eyes), they don't care about tomorrow because, well, they just won't be here, doesn't affect them. I guess they have no regard for there grandchildren. Sad

The earth will manage, even life will manage. It may not be as congenial to human life as it is now, but it will manage. The thing is, will we?

I hear the mantra among educators all the time -- teach the children how to learn, how to think -- don't just teach them facts, but teachers don't do it and I think in reality have no idea how to do it. Luckily some do... My son came home with homework relating to the Greenhouse Effect and Global Warming. He needed to define the GE. This was pretty straight forward copy and learn (he could choose his own source though). To follow this up he had to get differing views on GW, then present his own view based on his research, opinions and the role of the GE. Being 9 he found it quite tough, but he... [More]

Just to add to my previous post... This week's homework involves questions based around a fictitious newspaper article. The usual 'locate the answers in the text' type of questions but the 'speak about it' section contained two more interesting points to discuss at home... What is the purpose of a newspaper report? Do you know if everything you read in a newspaper report is true? Again this encourages thinking rather than just teaching them facts. The problem with teachers is that they are human, some try harder than others to stimulate the kids, others are just better at it, some just don't c... [More]

Unfortunately I think poor old Prof Cox is suffering flashbacks from his pop music days when everything was brightly coloured and fluffy... with the aid of some mind bending drugs of course. He thinks we all spend far too much time invading each other's plot of land and we spend far too much time on political arguments... profound, revolutionary 'out of the box' thinking prof, who would have picked that. What on earth would we all have done without the prof to point this out to us, of course he offers no realistic solution, because there is none. The fact is the planet is divided up into lots ...
