Can walking around generate electricity ?

Scientists have developed a novel new way to turn the act of walking in to a power generation system.
The concept was developed at the Center for Research in Advanced Materials (CIMAV) in an effort to find new ways to produce electricity from everyday activities.

The device consists of a pill-shaped cylinder attached to the sole of a person's shoes so that as they walk around the pressure from each footstep is converted in to mechanical-vibrational energy that is then stored for later use.
In the prototype the system was used to recharge a watch being worn by the user.

"Today, the energy generated by people walking is wasted; if we learn to harvest it and turn it into electricity, we can contribute to the global impact," said researcher Hurtado Macias.

The team is now working on making the system as efficient as possible in the hope that it could one day be used in a wide variety of practical applications.

Aye... and if you have the right partner, jammies and bed sheets, sparks can fly in the bedroom! Oh yes, the supposed cause of the mythical Spontaneous Bedroom Combustion.

Lol they are just realizing this? Did you know when you walk barefoot outside you are constantly pulling static electricity through the ground. But when you have shoes, the rubber soles stop the natural current from entering your body. Look it up if you wish it's known as 'Grounding' or 'Earthing'. This natural current has good antioxidant like effects.

this is not new, Marcia Griffiths published the original idea with the hit song, "Electric Boogie," That sparked the Electric Slide, a four wall line dance which hit the States in 1976.

I thought there were watches that wind themselves as you walk.

i thought the Japanese had floors in trains that generate electricity as people walk on it . They might well do and as others have shown there is flooring out there currently doing this. This is a little different, the power is generated by the shoe instead of the floor so the walker is the recipient, great for running personal devices rather than generating power for the surroundings (which could of course be done at the same time).

it's a great idea... it's free energy that would otherwise go untapped.
