Scientists discover way to generate electricity from ice

Thanks to a remarkable breakthrough, it may one day be possible to use ice to charge up your phone.
The discovery, which was spearheaded by the Institute of Nanoscience of Barcelona, concerns the phenomenon of flexoelectricity, which is where ordinary ice can generate electricity when it is subjected to mechanical deformation.

Under certain, extreme cold environments, electric polarization builds up on the ice's surface.

This, in fact, may help to explain how charge accumulates in thunderstorm clouds.

In practical terms, scientists were able to produce a measurable electric charge in a lab when ice slabs were gently bent between two metal plates.
In the future, the electromechanical capabilities of ice could make it a viable electricity source in certain situations - in particular in polar regions where ice is abundant.

This technology might also have applications both in space and on other planets.

Imagine a probe on Europa using ice to generate power, for instance.

For now, using ice to charge your phone might be a long way off, but it is remarkable just how abundant opportunities to generate electricity actually are.

Even the most mundane thing can potentially end up being an energy source.

"Flexoelectricity"?  C'mon, guys.

So, this is basically a variety of the piezoelectric effect in another solid object.  Practical applications of this are going to be super limited because the mechanical deformation of the ice electrical charge is a huge loss of efficiency, but in terms of the possibility of life on Europa, that's a big boost to that theory as the tidal forces shifting the ice and crust provide not just heat energy, but now also electrical.

Good points, and the issue you mention concerning electrical generation to possibly facilitate primitive lifeform development on Europa (as yet unknown), for example, does help with the general idea, as you said. After all, life obviously started here under the right allowable range of conditions, so why not somewhere else too if those conditions were similar enough?!

When that day comes there will be no phones. As usual with all the countless new electricity sources.

Oh great, now I suppose they will start hacking away at the icepacks and further increase our global warming.
