The money will go towards funding a study in to the impact of troll mythology on the island of Bornholm.
Trolls are a staple part of the myths and legends of Scandinavian folklore and now a researcher exploring the impact of these stories on the local environment has been awarded a sizable research grant to expand on his studies.
In particular the project will focus on the enigmatic island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea where tales of a troll by the name of Krølle Bølle have been told for years.
Researcher Lars Christian Kofoed Rømer, who is the receipient of the funds, is no stranger to investigating unconventional subjects having previously studied the topic of ghosts for two years.
The organization responsible for awarding the money, Denmark's Council for Independent Research (DFF), has defended the decision despite skepticism over the value of such a study.
"At DFF we believe that humanistic research should be funded on equal footing with all other research areas and we actually support that area more than we support societal research," said chairman Peter Munk Christiansen.
