Even a virtual handshake can establish trust

A new scientific study has determined that shaking hands with a robot can be surprisingly effective.
A firm handshake can often work wonders to help establish trust during business negotiations, but now according to a new study conducted by scientists at the University of Bath a handshake can even work when the two people shaking hands happen to be located thousands of miles apart.

To test this, researchers set up a series of mock house purchase negotiations involving a 58cm-tall humanoid robot called Nao which could be remote operated by another person using a computer.
Remarkably it turned out that using the robot to shake hands was no less effective at building trust and confidence in the deal than if the two participants were shaking hands in person.

"This experiment highlights just how important the symbolic ritual of shaking hands is upon the way people come to judge others as being trustworthy and willing to co-operate," said Dr Chris Bevan.

"Using a robotic avatar, we were able to demonstrate that this effect holds true even when a person cannot see the face of their counterpart."

Yep, we'll get alllll warm and fuzzy and disarmed about our wonderful anthropomorphized robot friends, probably even have sex with androids in the future, then wake up one day to a global robotocracy where we'll be discarded along with other biological trash.

It's all good until one accidentally crushes someone's hand.

The family and work friendly version of teledildonics. Not sure they are talking about shaking hands in the same sense you are...

Um sir? Did you feel like you trusted the man 1000 miles away more by shaking this robot's hand? "Um, yes" Study done. That's pretty much what these "scientists" are paid to do...

Not exactly. They are paid to do the above several hundreds, sometimes thousands, of times. They are also paid to think about doing it in the first place. After all, it never occurred to you.

I always use a 20+ second hug coupled with a slow swaying rock back and forth.
