An appropriately named canine companion managed to shoot his owner during a hunting trip in Indiana.
The bizarre accident, which has been highlighted in an effort to remind hunters to take safety lessons, occurred at the Tri-County Fish and Wildlife Area in northern Indiana on Saturday.
25-year-old Allie Carter had placed her 12-gauge shotgun down on the ground for a moment to re-position herself while hunting waterfowl when her excitable chocolate Labrador Trigger bounded over and stepped on it - depressing the trigger and firing a shot in to his owner's left foot.
Fortunately Carter did not suffer life-threatening injuries however the accident has prompted authorities to stress the importance of safety (and common sense) when hunting with firearms.
"We encourage everyone to take a hunter education course before they venture out in the field," said Indiana Conservation Officer Jonathon Boyd.
The incident echoes another similar accident that occurred a few years ago when a man hunting rabbits leaned his gun against a tree and ended up being shot when his beagle stepped on it.
