Globular clusters may harbor intelligent life

Scientists believe that globular clusters may be a good place to look for extraterrestrial civilizations.
While a manned mission to Mars is something that is likely to be achievable within the next few decades, sending humans beyond our own solar system will be another matter entirely.

Even at the speed of light, future explorers from Earth would take years to reach the next nearest star system and possibly even decades to reach the next nearest habitable planet.

There are however some areas of space where everything happens to be a lot closer together.

Globular clusters are extremely dense regions of space where anything up to a million stars can exist within an area measuring only 100 light years from one end to the other.
"A globular cluster might be the first place in which intelligent life is identified in our galaxy," said study lead author Rosanne DiStefano from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

"We call it the 'globular cluster opportunity'. Sending a broadcast between the stars wouldn't take any longer than a letter from US to Europe in the 18th century."

"Interstellar travel would take less time too. The Voyager probes are 100 billion miles from Earth, or one-tenth as far as it would take to reach the closest star if we lived in a globular cluster."

It's certainly not difficult to imagine an interstellar community of civilizations arising in such a region of space where communication and travel between worlds would be exponentially easier.

BTW, since the only known intelligent life (humans) is NOT found in a globular cluster, but rather in a spiral or barred spiral galaxy, seems just as reasonable to look within our own galaxy since we know life can exist there. That makes a massive assumption, that we are typical. With a sample size of just one we don't know that, so it makes sense to look EVERYWHERE that life is possible. The second point I would make is that the article is not talking about looking for intelligent life, it is talking about INTERSTELLAR civilisations, and we know of precisely none of them. With the decreased d... [More]

I would assume in these "Globular Clusters" there would be extream gravitational forces throwing things all around the "Clusters". Not sure how hospitable these places could be with everything being pulled and pushed around.

I was reading about this today. 0.01 LY between stars? That would make interstellar travel so much faster.

So what is this Forum about exactly? I see that there is a page with a bunch of bla saying that we could find alien life on some distant planet in a cluster. But we are more than aware that they are way closer than that. We are aware that there are sentient beings on earth which chooses to remain apart from humanity and whose prime directive is to monitor and not get involved with the human affairs. The are some sentient beings with ulterior motives whose intent appear benign that have dealings with our governments. We aren't stupid we are aware that this going on. Just because our governments... [More]

This forum is about actual real space news- real science. Not about aliens on Earth monitoring things- that's for the Conspiracy Theory section.

"It's premature to say there are no planets in globular clusters," states Ray. Who is saying that? Earlier in the article, it was admitted that one alleged planet was found in a globular cluster. Also, would the environment in those clusters have a substantial increase in radiation, since the stars are closer together? Wouldn't that also help to cut down on the number of planets that could support life? Still interesting stuff. That depends on what your definition of 'life' is. My thinking is that we will NEVER find life out there that resembles a human. Our definition of a sentient being may ... [More]

My apologies, rashore and Waspie, but my anti-tripe meter was making too much noise.... So what is this Forum about exactly? I see that there is a page with a bunch of bla saying that we could find alien life on some distant planet in a cluster. But we are more than aware that they are way closer than that. As rashore said, this forum is about science. Actual science, not woo. We are aware that there are sentient beings on earth which chooses to remain apart from humanity and whose prime directive is to monitor and not get involved with the human affairs. I bet we are just some random out in the middle of nowhere planet and there is a whole bunch of alien races chillin out in their area and can't be bothered to drive out this far!

I bet we are just some random out in the middle of nowhere planet and there is a whole bunch of alien races chillin out in their area and can't be bothered to drive out this far! That's not out of the realm of possibility. I like living in the sticks, won't be bothered by neighbors too often. Though the internet sucks out here.
