What is the world's most murderous mammal ?

The species most notorious for killing its own in cold blood is perhaps not what you might expect.
The very concept of murder might seem like an innately human act, but despite our notorious penchant for annihilating one another, murder is certainly not exclusive to the human race.

In a recent study published in the journal Nature, a team of Spanish biologists and geneticists compared the murder rates of 1,024 different types of mammals.
The worst of them all, it turned out, was the humble meerkat - a species that, despite its cute appearance, is so extraordinarily vicious that 1 in 5 of them will end up being murdered.

The reason for this is that meerkat society is rigidly hierarchical to the extent that pregnant females will typically kill their subordinate's offspring in order to make room for their own babies in the clan.

The study found that monkeys, lemurs and sea lions were also high up on the list while humans actually came quite far down and didn't even make the top 30.

Most animals other than humans will kill the sick, the trouble makers and for food when they are quite hungry.  The anti-social get chased away.  If they come back then sterner measures are taken. Other than in the heat of passion or anger, Humans kill for the sheer "fun" of it because we like it.  If the figures were rerun taking that into consideration, I wonder where we'd be?

You can eat grass without killing it (and many other living things).  Clip off the tops, eat, and the grass will still grow. I get your point though.  In most cases it can't be done without irreparable damage...

Some shrews spend more than half their day killing and eating insects, they make a living being serial killers. Even most Carnivora* aren't that "bloodthirsty"!    Carnivora is the name for the order than includes bears, felids, canids, weasels, foxes, skunks, raccoons, and pandas.
