Tech billionaires fund escape from the Matrix

Two Silicon Valley billionaires are funding efforts to prove whether or not we live in a simulation.
What if we told you that the world you live in isn't real ? It might sound like a concept straight out of the Keanu Reeves science fiction favorite The Matrix, but according to some of the world's top minds, the idea that we are living inside a sophisticated computer simulation is not only possible, it may actually be more likely than the idea that we are living in the real world.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is one such proponent of this idea. He argues that, given the rate at which 3D computer graphics have been advancing, we can expect that at some point in the future, video games will become so convincing that they will be indistinguishable from reality.

Given that likelihood, the possibility arises that such graphics are already possible and that we are in fact living inside such a simulation right now. Musk maintains that the odds of us living inside "base reality", as oppose to a simulation, are "one in billions".
Now according to an article in the New Yorker, two anonymous technology billionaires have been quietly funding efforts to prove once and for all that we are living inside a simulation.

Their goal - to find a way to escape back to actual 'reality', whatever that might be.

Who these people are remains unclear, but it seems that they are taking the idea very seriously.

Knock, knock, Neo...

I wrote a little story once where, if you're going to die, you can choose a 'Heaven' wherein your brain is hooked up to a computer and medical apparatus to keep your brain alive. The 'Heaven' you choose will be your reality after your 'death'. I like your idea. Quite often I like my dreams better than my waking reality.

I like to refine and simplify concepts like these to something more plausible.

Yes, I would think it would be much easier to simulate an individual's brain activity than to simulate an entire universe.

There are few things worse than a perennial whinger, you give them a free feed and they'd complain about your dining room decor.

So you need AIDS in order to experience enjoy?

Escape from one 'simulation' into a 'reality' which might turns out to be a 'simulation' of another 'reality'. If there is one matrix, why there won't be endless numbers of matrix as well?

Interesting thoughts, wookypooky. It is likely to produce a migraine thinking about it, but of course that would be pre-programmed into the matrix.

I think we do live in matrix. So I just bend things to my will

Yeah, I know.  But defending the hypothesis of a matrix with another hypothesis which requires the author(s) of the program to insert an immense amount of data about ants, from the genetic sequences to the details of the particular behavior of each species, not to mention all the other known and unknown species of organisms, minerals, rocks, stars in the sky, etc etc just becomes too ridiculous. a god-like power might do it, but it would be simpler to make it real.
