Known for his 'out there' alien theories, Tsoukalos started his career very differently.
Born in Switzerland, Giorgio A. Tsoukalos is best known these days as the focus of a long-lived tongue-in-cheek Internet meme in which anything and everything is explained as "aliens".
The image used in the meme is Tsoukalos as he appeared in the documentary series
Ancient Aliens, which has itself spawned a fair few memes, controversies and questionable claims.
Before he was an alien expert, however, the 43-year-old had a very different career - one that is just about as far removed from the subject of extraterrestrial visitation as it is possible to get.
His original role was in fact that of a bodybuilding promoter, a career that was inspired by a visit to his school by athletes from the International Federation of BodyBuilding and Fitness (IFBB).
Keen to become involved in the sport but realizing he would never be competitive himself, he decided to focus on the organizational side of things.
This, inevitably, saw him cross paths with the world's most famous bodybuilder - Arnold Schwarzenegger - at one of the Arnold Classic professional bodybuilding expos.
It wasn't until later in life, having founded
Legendary Times magazine, that he became known for his interest in the unexplained and in particular, his theories about ancient astronauts.
"Giorgio's research expeditions have taken him around the world and he is one of only a few people to have visited and explored nearly every mysterious ancient site on Planet Earth," the
History Channel wrote.
