Nick Pope: 'hostile aliens could wipe us out'

The former MoD UFO investigator has warned that we would stand no chance whatsoever against hostile extraterrestrials.
One of the most prominent figures in the field of UFO research, Nick Pope famously worked for the British Ministry of Defense from 1991 to 1994 during which time he was tasked with investigating reports of unidentified flying objects to determine whether or not they posed a risk to national security.

In a recent interview with The Sun, he expressed caution with regard to what might happen should an advanced extraterrestrial civilization decide to make its presence known.

"When European explorers encountered Native Americans, it was guns and horses against bows and arrows," he said. "If we face an alien invasion, it would be stealth fighters against bows and arrows, and even that is understating the technology that they would have."
"Their technology would be indistinguishable from magic. It's almost unimaginable."

"The weapons that an alien civilization may have could wipe out life in a heartbeat."

While Pope admits that there could be plenty of benign align civilizations in the universe, that won't count for anything if we happen to come into contact with a hostile one first.

"It only takes the existence of one super predator species and you're in trouble," he said.

I think massively-advanced civilisations are more likely to go down the cyborg/AI route for survival.  Consider humans during the next few hundred years.  As our technology advances exponentially we'll see mechanical replacement body parts that grow ever-more-indistinguishable from nature, then with enhanced properties of strength, durability, functionality, etc.1  Neural implants will enhance brain function, eventually connecting us all to the Internet of Minds so we can instantly share and access every experience, idea or emotion.2   At some point we will replace all the carbon-based mo... More a dodge than answer but since you went out so far of a reach as to call me "honourable gentleman" i will humblely accept it.

Interesting perspective. There is a hitch, of course :-) How do the human cyborgs reproduce, and by that, I don't mean just produce a body. It must be a being that is human, and that gets difficult to define,

The future...  We are all getting used to a virtual existence within a constantly-evolving VirtuomniverseTM 1 connecting the entire human race and an unimaginable number of AI creations.  All interacting digitally, all with access to every experience, every sensation, every emotion imaginable but enhanced a million billion times.  For the first time ever every human being is free and happy.  Brainless drones2 keep building more servers and solar panels to keep everything running, until the entire planet is devoted to us (and perhaps a few animals - just the cute ones).   If we want to ...
