Could the Earth itself be an intelligent entity ?

A new study has looked into the possibility that our planet is not simply a ball of water, metal and rock.
The Earth is the only home we've ever known - but could it really be a singular, living being ?

According to a recent study published in the International Journal of Astrobiology, there may be more to the so-called "Gaia hypothesis" than it might first appear.

"Conventionally, intelligence is seen as a property of individuals," wrote study co-author Adam Frank, a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Rochester.

"However, it is also known to be a property of collectives."

According to the study, a planet goes through four major stages of development based on its habitability and the emergence of intelligent life.
These range from an 'immature biosphere' (which is what the Earth was like billions of years ago), to a 'mature technosphere' (a perfect balance of biological and technological systems.)

"Right now, our civilization is what the researchers call an 'immature technosphere', a conglomeration of human-generated systems and technology that directly affects the planet but is not self-maintaining," the study authors wrote in a press release.

"For instance, the majority of our energy usage involves consuming fossil fuels that degrade Earth's oceans and atmosphere. The technology and energy we consume to survive are destroying our home planet, which will, in turn, destroy our species."

"Planets evolve through immature and mature stages, and planetary intelligence is indicative of when you get to a mature planet. The million-dollar question is figuring out what planetary intelligence looks like and means for us in practice because we don't know how to move to a mature technosphere yet."

This reminds me of the anime blue gender,  Where planet earth decides to kill off mankind for polluting her. It creates super huge bugs similar to the ones seen in starship troopers and wins a massive war against humanity. Forcing mankind to move to space. It's a very good show and I recommend you watch it

The Planet is not a living entity.  It is a planet that hosts billions, trillions even, of living entities.   While our planet hosts life...it is not life.  Nor is it attempting to purge us.  It does what it does...

While i agree the planet is not trying to kill us off, i do believe the planet itself is a living, conscious being(call me crazy LOL). Ive heard stories of people entering a deep, meditative state and being able to connect with earth itself.

You are not crazy.  You are just mistaken.  The only consciousness on the planet are of the living creatures that inhabit it.  If the Earth is conscious then it is evil.  Otherwise it would guide us away from the Earthquakes, the Hurricanes, the Tornadoes, the Forest Fires, and protect us.  Stories are stories and they are as old as mankind itself.  The Truth is something else.  Keep looking...look within.

Does that make humans evil then? Far from nurturing and protecting the lice and fleas that inhabit our bodies, we subject them to horrendous floods of poison, wiping our entire cultures at a time

Your analogy doesn't really fit because, on one hand...The Earth is not a Living Creature...Rocks and Mountains and Oceans are not alive.   The Atmosphere is not alive.  Our body's on the other hand are very much alive...and being attacked by other living creatures.  It is not evil to kill those that threaten us.   The entire point of being alive is to eat and keep from being eaten.  Sometimes to eat, one must kill...sometimes to keep from being eaten one must kill.   The only reason the Planet Earth has abundant life is because of it's orbit in a Sweet Spot for life around the sun. ... The Earth is much more alive than we are, but she is a servant, also.

The earth is most certainly alive , as far as intelligent conciousness , i would say it is possible , and we are just unable to understand it, or maybe it just don't talk to us , or we don't know how to hear it. Its got enough crap hangin out on it as it is, maybe it aint lookin for any new friends.

I have another view on this and that is that when we talk of 'consciousness' we are usually referring to 'awareness' on a sapient level (for example, humans..not to say that only humans can be sapient but let's go with it for now) All matter holds a charge to some degree or another and when there is a sufficient amount of like or compatible charges/frequencies that group together it then forms  a swell..a huge river or mass which amplifies these charges/frequencies or..for a lack of a better term, 'energies'. Thus this alone is what allows an object to even BE an object (If you ever played Fi... [More]
