James Cameron on threat posed by AI: 'I warned you guys...'

The 'Terminator' director maintains that he already warned mankind about the dangers of AI nearly 40 years ago.
Back in 1984, James Cameron's original 'Terminator' movie painted a picture of a future ravaged by nuclear armageddon and an endless war against intelligent machines bent on wiping out humanity.

While such a scenario hasn't yet come to pass in the real world, the march toward ever more sophisticated AI platforms is very much the real deal.

Speaking to CTV News recently, Cameron questioned the motivations behind this technology and highlighted the risks it could pose to the human race in the not-too-distant future.

"I warned you guys in 1984, and you didn't listen," he said.
"I think the weaponization of AI is the biggest danger. I think that we will get into the equivalent of a nuclear arms race with AI, and if we don't build it, the other guys are for sure going to build it, and so then it'll escalate."

"You could imagine an AI in a combat theater. The whole thing just being fought by the computers at a speed humans can no longer intercede, and you have no ability to deescalate."

So could something like ChatGPT really end up wiping out human civilization ?

Only time will tell.

If time traveling AI existed, there never would have been another Terminator movie after part 2!

There were 6 terminator movies so.... are you trying to tell us something?

Yep,parts 3-6 stunk...got more convoluted and unbelievable even for a scifi storyline. If time traveling AI does appear before us one day,I'm sure they'd agree...all traces of Terminator 3-6 must be destroyed  Give Cameron credit,he made the first 2 classics, but somehow got dragged back in for that last stinker

Being a slave to AI after an AI takeover might be cool, though? What if they run a better society and we're all just scared over nothing?   (hope AI sees this)

That's why there are proxy wars. Eisenhower even warned about the Military Industrial Complex in his farewell speech in 1961.

AI is typically portrayed as inevitably evil. Just another example of Hollywood conditioning. Why can't AI be chill and want to help out OR at the very least get bored with us and want to leave the planet?

Well there is a show called Eureak that has an AI house and it is benign for the most part.   Once it got hacked and it took it a while to find the bad code and delete it with the help of it's creator programmer.   So AI is not always depicted as evil, but people seem to prefer stories with some evil being wreaking havoc and putting people through hell.   It sells a lot quicker than other types of stories.
