'Our bears are not humans in costumes', Chinese zoo insists

Is this a real bear ? Image Credit: Twitter / SHAOXIA33139500 The controversy began when visitors to Hangzhou Zoo in China posted up footage of one of the sun bears standing upright on its hind legs.

The clip quickly attracted quite a lot of attention, with several social media users maintaining that the animal is little more than a person wearing a costume.

Since then, the zoo has been quick to play down such rumors.

"When it comes to bears, the first thing that comes to mind is a huge figure and amazing power... but not all bears are behemoths and danger personified," the zoo wrote in a statement that was intended to be from the perspective of one of the bears."We Malayan bears are petite, the smallest bear in the world."

As things stand, it's not absolutely clear if the bears are actually the real deal or not.
