A prison often described as one of the most haunted locations in the UK will be closing its doors in the new year.
Formerly Britain's oldest operating prison, Shepton Mallet closed its doors in 2013 and has since served as a tourist attraction and venue for ghost tours and other events.
It originally opened all the way back in 1625 and was closed, renovated and expanded several times. In 1939 it became a military prison and was used by the US Army to hang condemned prisoners.
Over the centuries it has housed thousands of inmates and many people believe that, to this day, the ghosts of those who died within its walls can still be seen and heard roaming its corridors.
Now, though, a dispute between the prison's owner and operator has resulted in the decision to shut the prison down for good, marking the end of an era for both workers and visitors alike.
For fans of the paranormal, it is a particularly hard pill to swallow.
"The prison is due to close... purely through a disagreement between the owners and the operators which I feel could surely be prevented," said ghost hunter Tony Ferguson.
"Not only will this result in the loss of many jobs, but the public will lose a great tourist attraction where many future generations can come to learn about the history of the prison."
"It will greatly affect the paranormal community who spend many a night trying to communicate with former inmates to find out why they still reside in the jail."
Ferguson has experienced some strange things in the prison during his own investigations there, including a sighting of a "full apparition that appeared out of nowhere and just walked off."
"I only hope that a solution can be found and that the prison can be kept open," he said.
