What happened to MH370 ? Image Credit: PD - Arpingstone
An Australian researcher believes he knows what happened to the plane and why nobody has found the wreckage.
Exactly what happened to Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 after it took off from Kuala Lumpur International Airport on March 8th, 2014 still remains one of the most enduring mysteries in aviation history.
The plane had been heading to Beijing Capital International Airport in China, but after a series of unexplained direction changes and the seemingly deliberate disabling of its transponder, the aircraft - along with all its passengers and crew - disappeared without a trace, never to be seen again.
What followed was one of the most extensive search and rescue operations the world had ever seen, with teams from multiple countries scouring vast areas of open ocean for any sign of the plane's wreckage.
As things stand, there is still no definitive explanation for what happened.
Now, though, Australian researcher Vincent Lyne has put forward a new theory that could help to explain both what happened to the plane and why nobody has ever been able to find it.
The disappearance of MH370, he argues, is the result of "a mastermind pilot almost executing an incredible, perfect disappearance in the southern Indian Ocean."
More specifically, he believes that the pilot - 53-year-old Zaharie Ahmad Shah - deliberately crashed the plane in a very specific part of the ocean where he knew it would never be found.
This particular location - a 20,000ft hole in the sea floor surrounded by high ridges - could in fact be the number one place to look for signs of the plane's wreckage.
This isn't the first time that it has been suggested that the pilot crashed the airliner on purpose, although it remains a mystery as to why he would have wanted to do this.
"Whether [the sea hole] will be searched or not is up to officials and search companies, but as far as science is concerned, we know why the previous searches failed and likewise science unmistakably points to where MH370 lies," Lyne wrote.
