Pentagon officials have been left stumped by unexplained drone incursions over restricted airspace.
According to reports, the mystery drones were spotted in precise formations over Langley Air Force base in east Virginia and the surrounding area for 17 nights in a row back in December 2023.
The formations included one or two fixed-wing drones flying around 100ft up while a larger number of smaller, commercially available drones flew together underneath.
Another, even larger drone would also be seen scouting out the area beforehand at high speed.
Despite their best efforts, US Air Force personnel were unable to catch the drones and they were also reportedly unable to shoot them down either due to federal laws prohibiting such action over US soil.
The incursions were particularly worrisome because the area is home to numerous sensitive facilities including Langley Air Force base, Fort Eustis and Naval Station Norfolk.
Radar detection also proved challenging due to the small size of the drones.
As it stands, Pentagon officials remain unclear on exactly who was behind the incursions - it could have been a curious hobbyist or a hostile foreign actor - but an analysis of the frequencies used to control the drones suggested that they were different to those used by off-the-shelf drone units.
The incident echoes a similar incursion by mystery drones over US nuclear facilities 2 months earlier.
So who exactly is responsible for sending these drones and what are they trying to achieve ?
Could China, Russia or some other foreign country be using them to spy on US Air Force bases ?
The search for answers continues.
