A couple who had been renovating their new home in a small village in France recently made a grisly discovery.
The new homeowners, whose house is situated in Erstroff near the German border, had been carrying out repairs and renovation work when, upon venturing into the building's attic space to fix a leak, they discovered to their horror that there was a skeleton tucked inside a cubby hole.
Police investigators quickly determined that the remains were most likely those of Alois Iffly - an 81-year-old man and former occupant who had gone missing all the way back in 2009.
At the time, nobody had been able to work out where he had gone and his own wife had continued living at the house until her death in 2020, completely oblivious to the fact that her long-lost husband's remains had been in the attic the entire time.
The discovery of a noose hanging from the rafters suggested that he had committed suicide.
Authorities are now working to definitively confirm his identity and cause of death.
Whether or not the house's new owners will opt to remain there, however, remains to be seen.
