Where should you go if the end of the world happened ? As it turns out, Mad Max may have had it right all along.
There are many possible scenarios that could spell the end of civilization, ranging from an asteroid strike or volcanic mega-eruption to an alien invasion or AI-fuelled robot uprising.
But if something like this did happen, where do you go to get the best chance of survival ?
Elite underground doomsday bunkers aside, new research headed up by Dr Florian Ulrich Jehn of the University of Hagen has found that Australia might be the best option.
This was based on an assessment of numerous studies concerning disaster scenarios as well as an analysis of various factors such as a country's wealth, remoteness, agricultural base and ability to produce essential materials and supplies.
"Australia produces a lot of food, it is far away from conflict zones, it is surrounded by a vast ocean that buffers the temperature, still has mines, industry and manufacturing, lots of room to re-use, and also good governance and relatively low inequality," Dr Jehn told
Mail Online.
That said, however, there are still things that Australia needs to import from other countries, so it would't be entirely self-sufficient.
The idea of an apocalyptic scenario in which people still survive in Australia sounds a bit like the
Mad Max movies, with survivors fighting over dwindling fuel and supplies.
Its potential to serve as a safe haven, though, would also depend on the nature of the disaster.
If a massive asteroid hit the Earth, for example, nowhere would be safe.
