The hapless feline, which was picked up in a rural part of the state, appeared to have come a very long way.
While it's not particularly unusual for someone's cat to disappear only to reappear several miles away, this is the first time we've heard of one being found thousands of miles away from home.
The cute little gray cat, who has since been nicknamed Samson, was recently brought into Sand Springs Animal Welfare in Oklahoma after being found roaming the area.
Given the fact that the cat was well groomed, staff expected to find that it belonged to someone local, but when they checked his microchip, they were in for quite a surprise.
It turned out that the cat was registered to someone in the UK some 4,000 miles away.
The mystery deepened further still when, upon contacting the registered owner, it turned out that their cat wasn't actually missing - so who did Samson belong to and how did he end up in Oklahoma ?
"Well, he would've had to have been shipped over and it's really expensive to have them shipped over and then they have to be quarantined and all kinds of stuff," Animal Welfare Coordinator Tracy Anderson told
First Alert4 News.
"So, somebody loved this cat and put the money into getting him over here but it's just hard to tell what happened to them, maybe they passed away or something, and it's just really hard to tell. "
"But he's with us, and he'll get a good home either way."
